The German Emigrants Database

Passenger manifests as a research source

The German Emigrants Database at the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven is a research project concerned with European emigration to the United States of  America. The database contains information on emigrants who left Europe for  the United States of America between 1820 and 1939. The data in the German Emigrants Database is based on information taken from the passenger  manifests of the ships on which the emigrants left Europe for America, primarily
from German ports.

This book provides a wealth of information about the background to the German Emigrants Database and the goals of research. Main areas of research such as migration logistics are explained, along with an account of the historical development of passenger manifests. The book is an excellent work of  reference for anyone who is interested in research into emigration or genealogy.

Besides this the book contains a detailed and annotated list with useful  adresses for emigrant searches.
